Care and Support Helps Everyone Succeed

Curriculum Coverage

Our Reception class follow the EYFS Curriculum. They begin each term learning about the same topic as KS1  but then branch off following children's interests. They do however join back in for special events, trips and dress-up days.

In Key Stages 1 and 2, we follow the 2014 National Curriculum for all subjects as well as the Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus for RE and our own enhanced PSHE/SMSC curriculum (driven by Gloucestershire's 'PinK Curriculum'). Through our skills based curriculum, the learning in each subject is grouped into topics - each class studies three topics a year, with each academic year learning through their Key Stage's topic each term. Additionally for Key Stage 2 our chosen Modern Foreign Language is Spanish.

To ensure every aspect of each subject is fully covered we plan our topics in advance on a rolling programme for each Key Stage. We also keep a record of teaching as it occurs so that any changes due to following the children's interests or current affairs are kept track of and future planning adapted accordingly.

The whole of a Key Stage learn through the same topic at the same time which is why many subjects have objectives that are revisited allowing children to consolidate  and extend their skills when they meet them again in a different year group. To ensure challenge and progression we use Chris Quigley's Milestones in his "Essentials Curriculum" to plan appropriately for the different year groups. Find out more here.

We know children learn best when they're engaged and enjoying their learning so we like to keep our topics a secret from the children. They arrive on the first day excited to find out what their new topic will be and quickly become immersed through our launch activities and lessons. Therefore future topics are listed on the overviews below as 'secret topic'!

(Please see our PSHEEnglish, Maths and Science pages for detailed information about those subjects.)

If you have any questions about the content or teaching of any area of the curriculum please pop in or make an appointment to speak to Mrs Eeley (Curriculum Leader).

PE is taught across the school both by our class teachers and specialist coaches from Atlas Sports (see our page on Sports Premium funding for more details). Each class does a mixture of PE and games inside and outside and also has a term of swimming lessons.
